Section 1: Why This Surgery Is the Beginning, Not the End
CABG surgery is one of the most powerful interventions in cardiovascular medicine. It can eliminate angina, improve heart function, and significantly extend life. However, it does not cure heart disease — it bypasses blockages that already exist.
Without lasting lifestyle changes, bypass grafts can develop new blockages (graft failure), and native coronary arteries can continue to accumulate plaque. Studies show that within 10 years, a significant proportion of vein grafts develop disease. Many patients require additional interventions over their lifetime.
⚕ A note from Heart Health HQ: Patients who attend and complete cardiac rehabilitation, take medications consistently, follow a heart-healthy diet, achieve a healthy body weight, quit smoking completely, exercise regularly, and manage stress have substantially better long-term outcomes — including lower rates of repeat procedures, hospitalizations, and mortality.
