Understanding Your Recovery Timeline

What to expect week by week, and when your life returns to normal

Section 1 of 5

Section 1: The Big Picture

Recovery from CABG surgery is not a straight line. Most patients experience gradual improvement punctuated by setbacks, plateaus, and unexpected challenges.

The most important things to know:

Full recovery takes 3–6 months — not 3–6 weeks

The first 6–8 weeks are bone and wound healing. Functional recovery continues for months afterward.

Fatigue is the most underestimated symptom

It is not weakness — it is your body's immense energy expenditure healing your sternum, heart, and blood vessels.

You will have good days and bad days

A difficult day after several good ones does not mean you are regressing.

Emotional recovery often lags behind physical recovery

Feeling low at 6 weeks when your incision has healed is common and does not mean something is wrong.

Comparing yourself to others is counterproductive

Recovery varies based on age, pre-operative heart function, other health conditions, and surgical complexity.
