Getting Ready to Go Home

Discharge criteria, education, and home setup

Section 1 of 5

Section 1: When Are You Ready to Leave the Hospital?

Most CABG patients spend 5–7 days in the hospital. Your team will be looking for specific milestones before discharge:

DISCHARGE MILESTONES

What your team is looking for

  • Pain controlled on oral medications (no longer needing IV pain relief)
  • Heart rhythm stable
  • No active signs of infection at incision sites
  • Able to walk independently at least short distances
  • Chest tubes removed
  • Eating and drinking adequately
  • Basic self-care possible (getting in/out of bed, going to the bathroom)
  • Discharge medications reviewed and prescribed
  • Follow-up appointments scheduled
  • A responsible adult at home for at least the first week

⚕ A note from Heart Health HQ: Delays happen. A fever, persistent arrhythmia, wound concern, or difficult blood pressure can all extend your stay. Ask your nurse which specific criteria remain outstanding so you know what you are working toward.
